St. Michael’s Primary School, Bolton

St Michael's Primary School

To meet the demands of the local community and Bolton Local Authority Education Department, the annual school intake was scheduled to rise in September 2010 from one form of entry to one and a half forms of entry. Manchester Diocese has invited Blue Sky Design Services, Equity Solutions’ full architectural, environmental, engineering and healthcare consultancy, to provide architectural solutions on this £575,000 project.

To meet the requirements of the proposed increase in the pupil population, it was proposed to construct a new Foundation Unit extension comprising a new Nursery and Reception Classroom with associated secure external play area, a new Key Stage 2 Classroom extension, a small office extension and remodel the internal layout of the existing school to improve circulation and create a new Main Entrance with adjacent Community Room.

The internal remodelling was necessary to provide classroom sizes that will accommodate the revised intake levels, meet the current area criteria and allow removal of the current temporary classroom located in the school grounds.

Removal of the temporary classroom allowed the construction of the new car park thereby releasing back external play area to the pupils. It was also intended that the new Community Room will encourage community use.
