Jordanthorpe Healthcare Centre

Jordanthorpe Healthcare Centre

This £4.2m development was the third LIFT scheme to be delivered in the Sheffield area and expands the range of healthcare services available in Jordanthorpe and brings health services closer to the local community, as well as acting as a major regeneration catalyst for further investment into a highly deprived area of Sheffield.

The ground breaking facility, which opened in October 2007, houses a range of health services under one roof and is the first of its kind in the south-west of the City.
The centre is home to a GP practice, podiatry surgery and clinics, two dental surgeries, physiotherapy treatment rooms and gymnasium and commercial space including a pharmacy and healthy eating café, all with new and improved parking facilities.

The local communities of Batemoor, Jordanthorpe, Lowedges and the surrounding areas were welcomed to their state-of-the-art new primary healthcare facility at a public open day on Saturday 27th October 2007 where Robert Bailey, Non-Executive Director of Sheffield PCT opened the new centre with a ceremonial ribbon cutting.

The open day was a big success as hundreds of people from the local community came to look around and take part in guided tours of the building and get information on the services available within the health centre.

Feedback about the new centre from those who attended has been overwhelmingly positive:
‘Magic place – we are so fortunate to have all of this here on our doorstep’
‘I think it’s wonderful’
‘Fantastic place, friendly people and well needed’
‘Very impressive building and facilities – including public spaces. A great buzz about the day – engaging and enjoyable’

Jan Sobieraj, Chief Executive of the Sheffield PCT said: “We’re so pleased to be welcoming the community and future patients to the new health centre in Jordanthorpe. This is another example of Sheffield PCT’s ongoing work to improve primary health facilities within Sheffield and improving access to services in local communities, and we hope the local community will work with us to maintain and develop the centre so it continues to provide them with the best healthcare.”

David Johnson, Director of Community 1st Sheffield Ltd said: “We hope that the local community in Jordanthorpe will be delighted with their new primary care centre. By being close to the local shopping precinct we hope that this centre revitalises the area as a focal point for the community.”

Working in Partnership with the Community
Local community had their say on public art for the new health centre.
Users of the current Jordanthorpe medical centre had the opportunity to ‘have their say’ on their preferred design option for a piece of sculpture which has become the railings next to the main entrance of the new centre.

The sculpture design option chosen by the local community is called ‘Pebbles in the Pond’ and was created by a local Yorkshire based sculptor. The sculpture was sponsored by Community 1st Sheffield and its construction partner for the scheme, Carillion.
